AN APPRAISAL OF THE IMPACT OF GLOBALIZATION ON POVERTY IN NIGERIA

Abstract
This paper examined the impact of globalization on poverty in Nigeria. It employed the doctrinal research method and relied upon
both primary and secondary sources of law relevant to the topic. An examination of the various impacts of globalization on poverty in Nigeria revealed that globalization poses both negative and positive effects on poverty reduction. The paper concluded that it behoves on the Federal Government of Nigeria to take pragmatic steps to harness the positive impacts of globalization on poverty reduction and curb its negative effects through adequate
policymaking and legislative actions. The paper therefore made a case for the integration of human rights norms/standards into poverty alleviation project designs, policies and strategies in Nigeria. The paper recommended the: domestication of international legal instruments for poverty reduction; the Constitution should be amended to make social and economic rights enforceable before courts in Nigeria, Pro-globalization policies should be reviewed to make room for Nigerian interest, and government support and patronage for local companies.
